Trump says UK's Starmer making 'a big mistake' with Chagos Islands deal

Al Jazeera

Trump says UK's Starmer making'a big mistake' with Chagos Islands deal Donald Trump has criticised the United Kingdom's plan to hand over the Chagos Islands to Mauritius, a day after the United States Department of State gave its official approval of the deal. The US president said on Wednesday that Prime Minister Keir Starmer was "making a big mistake" in the agreement to return sovereignty of the archipelago to Mauritius, and lease back the island of Diego Garcia, which is home to a UK-US military base. The Indian Ocean archipelago became part of British territory in 1814, with the UK detaching it from Mauritius before it gained independence in the 1960s. It then worked with the US to force the islands' residents to leave, in order to build a military base on Diego Garcia, which it had leased to the US. Mauritius won its legal battle for sovereignty over the islands in 2019, and the International Court of Justice (ICJ) urged the UK to cede control.

UK military to get powers to shoot down drones near bases

BBC News

British soldiers will be granted new powers to shoot down drones threatening military bases. The plans, to be unveiled by Defence Secretary John Healey in a speech on Monday, are intended to allow troops to take faster, more decisive action. Four British airbases used by US forces reported mystery drone sightings last year, while drones have disrupted airspace across Europe a number of times in recent months. The new powers will only apply to military sites, but could be extended to civilian locations such as airports. Healey is set to announce the introduction of a kinetic option, first reported by the Daily Telegraph, that would enable British troops or Ministry of Defence (MoD) police to shoot drones posing a threat to a military site in the UK.

Have Russians set up a military base in my childhood home?

BBC News

Have Russians set up a military base in my childhood home? It was another busy day at work. Russian forces had attacked my home region of Zaporizhzhia again: a region in the south of Ukraine, split between the Russian invaders, who claim it all as theirs, and the defending Ukrainians. Sitting in my office in central London, I was feeling nostalgic. I decided to take a quick look at the latest satellite images of my childhood village - the poetically titled Verkhnya Krynytsya (or Upper Spring in English), in the Russian-occupied part of the region, just a few kilometres from the front lines.

Denmark bans drone flights after latest drone sightings at military bases

Al Jazeera

Denmark has barred civilian drones from its airspace before a European Union Summit, following reported sightings of drones at several military locations overnight on Saturday. The Nordic country has been on alert following a string of drone incidents over the past week, which have led to the closure of several airports. The ban will remain in place from Monday through Friday of the coming week, when Denmark, which holds the rotating presidency of the EU for the second half of this year, will be hosting European leaders. In a statement earlier in the day, the country's Ministry of Defence said it had "several capacities deployed" after the drone sighting, without elaborating on the deployment, the number of drones or the locations. The latest incident comes a day after the NATO military alliance announced it was upgrading its mission in the Baltic Sea with an air defence frigate in response to the drone incursion in Denmark. In a statement sent to the Reuters news agency, NATO said it would "conduct even more enhanced vigilance with new multi-domain assets in the Baltic Sea region".

Pentagon baffled by 8,000 mysterious UFO orbs hovering over US military bases

Daily Mail - Science & tech

An invasion of small metallic orbs has been spotted hovering over the US in recent years, leaving the Pentagon scrambling to identify these mysterious UFOs. A new report from the crowdsourced platform Enigma, which allows people to report sightings of unidentified flying objects (UFOs), reveals more than 8,000 sightings across the US between December 2022 and June 2025. Among these, 422 reports specifically describe metallic orbs, with the majority observed between 1am and 4am near military installations in New York, California, and Arizona. Eyewitnesses, including civilians, pilots, and military personnel, reported seeing the spheres hover silently before moving at extreme speeds, leaving no trace of their departure. Some of the sightings have been captured on video or radar, though many remain unexplained.

Drone incursions on US bases come under intense scrutiny as devices prove lethality overseas

FOX News

Sen. Tim Kaine, D-Va., tells Fox News Digital he's frustrated by US officials not being forthcoming about the drone incursions over Langley Air Force Base. FIRST ON FOX: A group of House Republicans is demanding details on how government agencies are addressing the growing threat of unauthorized drone incursions on U.S. military installations. In letters sent Thursday, the Subcommittee on Military and Foreign Affairs requested a trove of documents and communications from the Departments of Defense (DoD), Transportation (DOT), and Justice (DOJ). The letters note that in 2024 alone, there were 350 drone incursions at over 100 U.S. military bases. Lawmakers believe many of the responses to the illegal incursions, including an instance where a group of drones traipsed over Langley Air Force Base for over two weeks in December 2023, have been insufficient and fragmented.
